The original death certificate issued by the registrar. Most institutions need to see this. You can order extra copies from the registrar — it is worth having several.

Recommended: 4 copies

A certified copy made by a solicitor or notary. Some institutions accept these instead of the original, which means you can send to multiple places at once.

Recommended: 3 copies

The original or a certified copy of the will. This confirms who the executors are and how the estate should be distributed.

Recommended: 2 copies

The court document that gives executors legal authority to deal with the estate. Not always needed — smaller estates or joint accounts may not require it. Applied for through the Probate Registry.

Recommended: 3 copies

If there is no will, this is the equivalent of a grant of probate. Applied for through the Probate Registry by the next of kin.

Needed if transferring assets to a surviving spouse — ISA transfers, joint accounts, property ownership changes.

The equivalent of a marriage certificate for civil partnerships. Needed for the same transfers.

Photo ID for the executor. Most institutions need to verify your identity before releasing information or funds.

Alternative photo ID for the executor. Some institutions accept this instead of a passport.

A recent utility bill or bank statement in the executor's name, dated within the last three months.

The deceased's passport. Some institutions ask for this. It should also be cancelled — HMPO can do this by post.

The deceased's driving licence. DVLA should be notified — Tell Us Once can handle this.

Recent statements for the deceased's accounts. Useful for identifying direct debits and standing orders that need cancelling.
